Porcupine Quill Earrings - White Lightning Bolts
These earrings are made with dyed porcupine quills wrapped around strips of rawhide cut in the shape of lightning bolts. They are just under 4 inches tall and about three-quarters of an inch at the widest.
The middle of the design is embellished with metal sequins, tacked down with beads. The bottom of the earrings are decorated with shells that are about three-quarters of an inch in diameter.
Total length of the earrings is just under 4.75 inches

Quillwork is one of the many traditional art forms of the Lakota people. There is a lot of time and work that goes into quillwork. The quills are removed from a porcupine, then are cleaned, dyed, soaked until pliable and woven or sewn into designs unique to every family or tribe. Quillwork is not water resilient and should be well taken care of.
