This beautifully intricate barrette is made with size 10 beads, the quillwork is wrapped around rawhide and sewn down to leather. The medicine wheel has two strands of beads attached to cowry shells. Barrette is just under 4 inches long and just over 2.5 inches at its widest.
The earrings are about 3.75 inches in length.
Quillwork is one of the many traditional art forms of the Lakota people. There is a lot of time and work that goes into quillwork. The quills are removed from a porcupine, then are cleaned, dyed, soaked until pliable and woven or sewn into designs unique to every family or tribe. Quillwork is not water resilient and should be well taken care of.
