Quilled Butterfly Barrette - Indigo

Quilled Butterfly Barrette - Indigo
This beautiful slide stick barrette is made out of rawhide cut into the shape of a butterfly, decorated with wire and wrapped with dyed porcupine quills. The butterfly is just over 3.75 inches wide and about 4 from the top of the wing to the bottom. The slide stick is about 5 inches in length, about a quarter of an inch around, and the quill work on the stick is just over an inch in length.
Quillwork is one of the many traditional art forms of the Lakota people. There is a lot of time and work that goes into quillwork. The quills are removed from a porcupine, then are cleaned, dyed, soaked until pliable and woven or sewn into designs unique to every family or tribe. Quillwork is not water resilient and should be well taken care of.
